The Lord Hears the Cry of the Poor
When we are humble God hears us. When our hearts are broken God hears us. The wail of the orphan, the widow. The immigrant. God hears us. This is the common thread in the readings for this Sunday. I feel like we got to see it firsthand this past week in the City Council and County Supervisors meetings on Monday and Tuesday respectively. Back up, though. On Sunday, after the 7 pm mass, we held a beautiful vigil. We processed the Eucharist up the alley. Then we had some quiet time of devotion, sang some songs, and poured our hearts out to Jesus, asking him to help us, and to be with our elected officials the following two days as they voted on an ordinance that would expand, albeit slightly, some protections for immigrants.
The following day, after a press conference in front of city hall, some of our members were able to voice their hope that the Council would pass this ordinance. “There are more than 2,000 persons awaiting your response,” said Eva, one of our parishioners to Councilmember Vivian Moreno and other Councilmembers, “and they hope you will say ‘yes.’ I am your voice to take your response back to them. Please have open hearts to us as we are all suffering with our kids. We have parents and mothers who are afraid . . . We are waiting for your support and your ‘yes’ so I can take it back to them.” And what happened? The Council heard Eva’s voice and answered yes. The next day, on Tuesday, Brenda, a young adult from our parish, did the same thing at the County Board of Supervisors meeting. “Together with SDOP we have gathered with over 650 people . . . I am here to be the voice of my immigrant brothers and sisters who are being persecuted . . .Do you not see how your communities are suffering, or are you going to choose to look away?” The Supervisors also heard Brenda’s voice and voted in favor. One of the elected officials said afterwards, “In this one meeting I heard more anguish and pain than in the entire five years before.”
God indeed hears the cry of the poor. But God needs us, our voices, to help announce that cry to those who can do something about it. Please, if you can, lift your voice. We will be praying for you and waiting for your “yes.”
