A Message from Our Youth Minister, April Martinez
Oftentimes, we find ourselves waiting. Waiting for a sign, for a clear answer, for God to give us the green light before we move. But today’s Gospel reminds us that God is already waiting for us. He is not holding back. He is inviting us to take the next step: to ask, to seek, to knock.
In these past few weeks, we made an announcement inviting people to consider becoming catechists. Every year, this moment brings a mix of hope and uncertainty. Will anyone sign up? Will there be enough people willing to walk with our youth on their journey of faith?
If I’m honest, there is a real fear that comes with serving the youth. It is not because they are difficult. It is because they matter. The weight of wanting to do it right can feel heavy. Sometimes that fear makes us hesitate, as if we are waiting for more certainty before we say yes. But in today’s Gospel, Jesus challenges that way of thinking. He reminds us to be bold and to ask.
So I did. I prayed. I asked God to send people. And like the disciple who said, “Lord, teach us to pray,” I found myself learning to pray not with perfect words but with trust. Jesus says, “Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened.” And I saw that happen. People came forward. They said yes.
What moved me the most was something they all seemed to say in one way or another: “I don’t know if this is for me or if I can do this… but here I am.” That, to me, captures what Jesus is calling us to in today’s Gospel.
And not only did new catechists say yes. Some who had served before reaffirmed their yes. Even though they knew the challenges, they chose to trust again. That kind of faith, that willingness to keep showing up, is its own form of knocking.
God is not waiting for us to be perfect. He is waiting for us to respond. These catechists, new and returning, are living proof that when we knock, the door will be opened.
