We Belong. To Each Other.
Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. We are reminded that our One God is a community of Three Persons. This is hard (impossible?) for us to really understand. But what I return to each year at this time is theme of interconnectedness. If God is a family of multiple persons, and we are made in the image and likeness of that God, then it seems only logical that built deep into our identity is this desire for community, for family, for being in relationship with others.
I believe this squares with our lived experience. If we look at times we are happiest, it is often when we are in the presence of other people, sharing something deep and beautiful with them. That is because, I believe, meaningful experiences of community put us in touch with that deep identity built into us, that identity that we are made for each other, that we belong to each other.
Last Sunday was so joyful for Fr. Pepe and me, as we looked around at people after mass enjoying themselves on the playground. It was the highlight of our day! We thank all of the people who worked so hard to make it possible, especially office staff members Blanca Cintron, Jesenia Souriyask, and Bertha Olivas. We thank all of you who prepared food, brought cards or gifts, and who showed up to wish us well. It was a wonderful reminder of the deepest reality: We Belong—to Each Other.
This is also why it is so painful to experience what is happening in cities across the country, where ICE agents are raiding and detaining our immigrant brothers and sisters. We see the strong reaction of people. And it should be no surprise. When people who are essential members of our community, who work hard for their families, who pay taxes, and who attend our churches and live in our neighborhoods are suddenly ripped away, this of course is going to cause great pain and outrage. It should! It is because at heart we are built for one another, and we belong to one another. And that does not depend on whether we have documents or not. I encourage us all keep attending mass together so that we can be reminded of this deepest part of our identity, who are, and Whose we are.It is the Truth.
