The Advocate is with Us
Once when I was hearing a confession, someone expressed disappointment in themselves for not fulfilling a commitment. From somewhere inside me came words to console them, and I spoke them, and I have marveled at their wisdom ever since. I said, “More important than your faithfulness to God is God’s faithfulness to you.” I believe those words came from beyond me, from Someone who speaks and lives inside me. In today’s Gospel, Jesus says, “Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our dwelling with them.” I believe God who dwells in me spoke those words.
It is appropriate that on the Feast of Pentecost Fr. Pepe and I celebrate with you our 25 years of priesthood. Because what the Spirit who dwells in us reminds us is this truth: most important in any anniversary celebration is not our faithfulness to God but God’s faithfulness to us. We celebrate with you how good God has been to us these past 25 years, and in a special way, how good God is to us now, through YOU. We could not be more happy than to celebrate our anniversary with you, the good people of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish.
It is also important to note that in these challenging times, when we walk around with fear due to the threat of ICE raids, like the kinds we have heard about in the news here in San Diego, that the Advocate is with us. The Spirit of God is with us. I believe firmly that God makes his dwelling within us, both individually and as a community. It is so important that we keep coming to mass, because it is here that we are reminded of the truth of who we are as God’s sons and daughters, each of us made in God’s image. And this can give us inspiration and courage to face the world. I want to assure you that we priests and some committed parishioners are keeping watch in front of the church during Sunday masses, morning and evening, to make sure that if anything were to happen, we would do all we can to protect you.
So, please keep coming! Be reminded of God’s dwelling within you. Be reminded of God’s faithfulness to you. It is the most important thing we can know.
