The Spirit of God Dwells in Us
Every year on November 9th the Church celebrates the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica, which is a Church in Rome, the Basilica of St. John Lateran. It is the popes’ church, and considered to be the mother and head of all the churches in the City of Rome and the world.
It reminds us that certain spaces are holy. And yet we miss something essential if we think only buildings are holy, or if we think only buildings are the Church. What St. Paul reminds us in the First Letter to the Corinthians is that WE are God’s building: “Do you no know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” If we really take that to heart we can see why Jesus is so upset in the Gospel, as moneychangers and sellers are occupying the Temple, and he drives them out with a whip. “Stop making my Father’s house a marketplace!” he shouts. If we are God’s temple, Jesus wants to drive out anything that reduces or cheapens the specialness of who we are.
This vision is also why it is so important that we continue to stand with immigrants and work for immigration reform. Our current laws and practices do not see people as the ends that we are, as the sacred vessels of the Spirit that we are. Rather, we see people’s value only in terms of what they can offer to help the US and its economy. It is as if we have forgotten that we are indeed a country of immigrants, and that immigration has made us the great nation that we are.
This week, on Thursday, November 13, which is the Memorial of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini (1850-1917), a patron saint of immigrants, we will hold a candlelight prayer vigil outside the Federal Building (880 Front Street) at 6:30 pm. Migrants are currently being incarcerated in the basement of that building before they are shipped to other detention centers. We hear stories of their mistreatment in conditions that are difficult, sometimes staying there longer than they are supposed to stay. Please join us. Buses will be provided. We will stand with them, these Temples of the God, to remind ourselves of the absolute dignity of each and everyone of us, God’s holy people. Diocesan Celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe
The celebration will take place on Sunday, December 7.
- The festivities will begin with a procession at 11 am departing from North Park’s Morley Field Sports Complex at Upas and Jacaranda streets.
- The Eucharistic Celebration will be at 1 pm at Saint Augustine High School. Bishop Felipe Pulido will be the main celebrant.
