This is of God
“Este es de Dios” were the words one of the planners of our July 31st St. Ignatius said to me, as she described the spirit she felt during the celebration. The ministry groups coming together in a seamless and beautiful way, honoring four community members as we did, the delicious dinner outside, and the lovely music--it was all so beautiful. And to top it off, our own Mayor gave us a commendation for our good work with migrants and immigrant issues. Truly it was a wonderful evening. And I want to thank all who did so much to make it the special celebration of our parish that it was. In the deepest way possible, that night we all lived and celebrated out motto: WE BELONG.
I conclude with a transcription of Mayor Todd Gloria’s words, commending us, reminding us that immigrants make our city great, and telling us the city stands with us. Let’s talk consolation in his words:
“In a time where we feel so pulled apart, so separated, where we seem to want to harm the least amongst us and where love seems to be in short supply, this church, not just in this sanctuary but all across the city I have the honor of seeing your leaders at work across the city spreading a message of love of welcome and of safety. And what I want you to know is that what you do here in this church I hope to take with me all across San Diego. And I'm here tonight to say simply, as the son of a maid and a gardener as the grandson of grandparents who came from Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Alaska and Europe I'm here to say that immigrants make our city a better place. That has been true in the past, that is true today, it will always be true. I present this proclamation on behalf of the city of San Diego acknowledging our Lady of Guadalupe for the work that you all do and I ask you to continue to do that work. It’s what God calls us to do, to express the love of Jesus Christ, to welcome one another the stranger as our own, and to make sure this world is safe not just for ourselves but for the little ones who are here. And I want you to know that your city stands with you shoulder to shoulder we will do this work together. So, Father I present the certificate to you all and I express my appreciation to all of you, keep up the fight let's make San Diego the safest place for everyone regardless of their status thank you all very much.”
