Behold, I Make All Things New
If you had the chance to watch Pope Leo XIV be introduced, it was deeply moving. It was my day off and I could watch the entire thing. I was surprised by how emotional I got, as I fervently prayed for whoever the next pope would be; and then as Robert Francis Prevost was announced as Pope Leo XIV, and as he was standing there, receiving peoples’ joy, I got emotional again. I felt at once the immensity of God and the finiteness of us, and our Church. Could I dare to hope that God who is so big could be focused on someone and something so limited as a single man who becomes pope and a church of limited believers?
And yet, that is, in fact, what we believe. It is the vision expressed in the second reading this week, from the Book of Revelation: “Behold, God’s dwelling is with the human race. He will dwell with them and they will be his people and God himself will always be with them as their God.” What a consolation! And yet it is a project that is not yet finished. For the vision goes on, “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or mourning, wailing or pain, for the old order has passed away.” This is our hope for the future, but there is still too much death, too much pain, there still are too many tears.
As I think about the challenges we face, especially in light of immigration laws, I think that love is the bottom line. It is Jesus’ words in the Gospel: “As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.” This is a higher bar than loving others as we love ourselves. We are called to love others the way Jesus has loved us. When we realize how good God has been to us, and how good God is to us now, it is difficult to justify any kind of hatred or ill will towards others, for any kind of reason, political or other.
God wants to make all things new. We pray that Pope Leo XIV can remind of us the way forward, that we are called to love others the way Jesus has loved us. May God bless Pope Leo XIV!
